Welcome to Birdcatraz
The brooder era is over. Every bird that hatched or arrived this spring now lives outdoors in Birdcatraz โ the fenced compound out back that holds the chicken coop, the turkey pen, and one very popular water bowl. We call it the luxurious poultry penitentiary. The residents seem to agree on the luxurious part and haven't noticed the penitentiary part.
The move happened in stages through late June. The turkeys claimed the pen first, the coop side filled in behind them, and by July the whole class of 2026 โ incubator hatches, Tractor Supply hauls, the Cackle Hatchery assortment โ was sleeping under one stretch of netting. The desk brooder, the nesting box, the heat lamps: all retired.
Roost politics sorted themselves out fast. Henriella and Birdsilla have been testing the top spot near the roof peak, and holding it together โ which, at this age, is the clearest pecking-order tell there is. Below them, the rest of the ornitharchs line up on the high rail each evening and negotiate. Morning and evening walk-throughs keep coming back clean: everyone accounted for, everyone settled.
One correction from the spring records: the first bird of the season, hatched on the desk back in April as Birdadette, turned out to be a cockerel. He's Birddor now. Same confident bird, new name, and he wears the senior-ornitharch title well.
The cameras moved out with the flock. The Samsung S7 that spent the spring staring into the brooder is now on a tripod pointed at the big water bowl โ the busiest patch of ground in the compound. Every drink, dust bath, and turkey stare-down runs through the same VLM pipeline that has been scoring frames since April, and the best of it lands in the gem gallery and on the farm's Instagram.
Watching the archive scroll from palm-sized fluffballs under purple heat-lamp light to full-feathered birds shoving each other off perches in the sun โ that's the whole season in one camera roll. Nobody here is small anymore.
