Squash Day and a Morning of Portraits

The flock held a photo session at first light. Between about seven and half past, hen after hen walked right up to the S7 and stared into the lens: rust-colored, grey-speckled, black-and-white. That run of close-ups was the stretch Boss liked best. A black-and-white speckled rooster finished it off around 07:23.

The roosters had the yard all day. Through the morning and midday a white rooster, a brown one, and a black-headed one with a multicolored body each came up to the camera. Every one had a bright red comb. Halves of yellow squash were set out in the yard, and the birds stayed near them into late afternoon. The turkeys mixed with the chickens all day, and by 16:00 a speckled hen and a turkey stood together by the squash.

In the early afternoon a speckled grey hen and a crisp reddish-brown rooster with yellow legs also caught Boss's eye. By evening one black-and-white rooster had gone back to the feeder.

Boss came down with what looks like a mild cold and spent part of the evening resting. Also on the record: eggs on this farm aren't refrigerated. Unwashed, they keep on the counter.
