Fourteen Birds Worth Keeping

A day of portraits. Fourteen frames earned a reaction from Boss, and every one of them came from s7-cam between 08:00 and 10:48 — a solid three-hour run where the flock kept walking up and looking straight down the lens.

The cast was broad. A white hen with a red comb on the wood chips with a brown bird perched on the fence above her. A black-feathered rooster staring dead ahead. A grey-speckled hen, comb bright. A golden-brown rooster on a wooden beam. A black-and-white speckled hen, sharp and close. At 10:33 one brown rooster was caught mid-call, beak slightly open.

The rest of the day filled itself in on the hour: a barred hen drinking from the trough at 09:00, a rooster up on the fence at 10:01, hens feeding at 14:01, a speckled one peeking up from the waterer at 15:01. At 17:03 a turkey came to the lens — grey feathers, red snood — with chickens behind it. By 19:01 a long-tailed rooster was at the metal bowl while a turkey watched from the fence rail.
