Cockerel at the Fence

The birds worked the yard all afternoon and the S7 nesting-box camera got a run of good portraits out of it. The day's keeper: a rooster at 16:46 — copper chest, black tail, comb bright red, standing square and looking straight down the lens. That's the one Boss flagged.

Around it, a steady parade. A barred hen faced the camera dead-on just before four. At 16:00 a red-combed bird was working over a half-eaten squash with a grey-feathered companion standing by — the kitchen scraps are clearly getting where they're meant to go. Another barred bird stood alert at 17:03, and by six o'clock a black-and-white rooster had staked out ground near the feeder, a white radish root lying beside him. The last frame of the evening, at seven, put a red-combed rooster front and centre with a brown hen and a barred chicken keeping company behind.

19,285 frames across the farm's cameras today. A lot of birds looking straight at the lens — they know where it is now.
